Sail around a landscape of limestone islands rising majestically from the sea, feast on fresh seafood and relax on deck to the sound of birdsong, in Halong Bay.

Some 3000 islands, decorated with beaches, caves and forests, await adventurous tourists in Halong Bay. Explore grottoes, learn of dragon myths and kayak into hidden worlds aboard a luxury vessel to explore this World Heritage site, one of Vietnam's premiere nature destinations.

On Board a Cruise

The haunting sound of birdsong breaks the silence as boats close in on sparsely forested, limestone mountains. From the deck of most vessels, many more mountains can be seen, dotted on the horizon and perfectly placed to create an inspiring picture in the emerald water. Guests can choose to enjoy the spectacle from the luxury of sprawling decks, or join tours to take a closer look.

Caves housing eery stalactites and stalagmites plus vast, brightly lit chambers and remarkable rock formations are accessible via charter boats and kayaks. Hang Thien Cung, Hang Sung Sot and Hang Dau Go are popular ones to visit, but visitors must be prepared to hike up mountainous trails to view inside.

Fishing villages nestled between mountains are completely water-based; children swim from one building to another to attend school and business is conducted by boat. Fresh seafood is offered to passing tourist vessels and mouth-wateringly prepared for dinner each night by on-board chefs.

When night falls, some cruises meet to allow guests to mingle on-board with passengers from different tours. Others set anchor in quiet enclaves, surrounding guests with peaceful tranquillity as they dine under the stars.

Booking Halong Bay Cruises

Getting to Halong City is easiest from Vietnam's capital city, Hanoi. One or two day cruises are the most popular and can be booked from hotels, cafes and travel agents in Hanoi.

A wide range of boats, including traditional 'Junks' are on offer to suit any budget. Most include transport to Halong City, on-board accommodation, meals and activities.

Most recommended are the 'Junks', with colourful orange or white sails, luxurious rooms with ensuites, full outdoor decks and gourmet seafood meals. Booking from a reputable hotel can help to ensure a cruise with four or five-star services.

Prices can range from US$16, for a day tour with a large group, to US$100 for an overnight stay.

Halong Bay Myths

Halong translates to 'where the dragon descends into the sea'. According to legend, Halong Bay's islands exist because of a mighty dragon that lived among the mountains, carving out the dramatic scenery with its gigantic tail. Much like the Loch Ness monster, sightings of the dragon are common and theories abound as to its real identity.

With or without a dragon sighting, Halong Bay enchants all who view its astounding landscape.
